Obama: Rakyat Palestina Layak Memiliki Negara Merdeka

RAMALLAH, KOMPAS.com — Presiden Amerika Serikat, Barack Obama, Kamis (21/3/2013), menunjukkan dukungannya terhadap terbentuknya sebuah negara Palestina merdeka.
"Rakyat Palestina layak mendapatkan negaranya sendiri. Amerika Serikat sangat berkomitmen untuk melihat sebuah negara Palestina yang independen dan berdaulat," ujar Obama dalam jumpa pers bersama dengan Presiden Palestina Mahmoud Abbas di Ramallah, Tepi Barat.
Dalam kesempatan yang sama, Obama mengecam keputusan Israel yang tidak menghentikan pembangunan permukiman Yahudi di Jerusalem Timur dan Tepi Barat.
Obama mengatakan terus berlangsungnya pembangunan permukiman Yahudi itu tidak menolong upaya mencapai perdamaian antara Israel dan Palestina.
"Kami menilai, melanjutkan pembangunan permukiman Yahudi merupakan langkah konstruktif. Langkah itu tidak mempercepat upaya menciptakan perdamaian," kata Obama dalam jumpa pers bersama Presiden Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, di Ramallah, Tepi Barat.
Sebelum jumpa pers digelar, kedua pemimpin melakukan pembicaraan sekitar upaya untuk menghentikan konflik Israel-Palestina.
Dalam pertemuan itu, Presiden Abbas menyampaikan kepada Obama bahwa Palestina tidak bisa membicarakan masalah perbatasan dan masa depan negara ini selama Israel menciptakan sendiri garis perbatasannya dengan terus membangun permukiman Yahudi.
Abbas menyampaikan kembali keinginan ralyat Palestina memiliki negara dengan wilayah Tepi Barat, Jalur Gaza, dan Jerusalem Timur, yang merupakan wilayah pendudukan Israel sejak 1967.
Sejak saat itu, Israel terus membangun puluhan permukiman Yahudi di Tepi Barat dan Jerusalem Timur yang kini didiami sekitar 560.000 warga Israel.
Jumlah ini meningkat 60.000 orang sejak Obama menjadi Presiden Amerika Serikat empat tahun lalu.
